Product Focus: EP Catheter

Proterial Cable America High Performance Medical Solutions (PCA-HPMS) makes vital components for the EP (Electrophysiology) Catheter, a medical device used for procedures crucial in diagnosing and treating various heart rhythm disorders.

Learn more about the EP Catheter, how important it is to cardiac care, and how PCA-HPMS is such a big part of the process.

What is Electrophysiology Study?

An Electrophysiology study, or EP study, is a medical test examining the electrical activity in a patient’s heart to potentially diagnose irregular heart rhythms called arrhythmias. The test uses catheters that go into your heart to capture its signals. In some cases, providers can fix the problem during the procedure.

EP has a variety of cardiac care uses:

  • Diagnose the type of arrhythmias.
  • Determine if treatment is needed for your abnormal heart rhythm, which may include: medication, cardiac ablation. a pacemaker. an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), or surgery.
  • Determine if heart rhythm disorder medications are working properly.
Cardiologist doctor examine patient heart functions and blood vessel on virtual interface. Medical technology and healthcare treatment to diagnose heart disorder and disease of cardiovascular system.

What is an EP Catheter?

The EP Catheter is the device used during the EP procedure. Types of EP Catheter include Mapping catheter, ICE (Intracardiac Echocardiography) catheter, or Ablation catheter. It is inserted into the heart to record electrical activity, identify abnormalities, visualize cardiac structures, monitor catheter location within the heart, or used for ablation treatment.

Diagnostic catheters stimulate the heart with electrical pulses or ultrasound signals and reads the information. Ablation catheters sends energy to specific locations to treat arrhythmias.

Ultimately, the result of using an EP means medical professionals will have an accurate map of the heart’s electrical activity and will be guided to potentially treat an arrhythmia.

What are the Parts of an EP Catheter?

Several key components make up the construction of the EP Catheter:

A catheter typically has a disposable shaft leading to a distal tip. The catheter is inserted into the heart during the procedure.

Cable runs up the shaft to the tip, where it connects sensors or electrodes to transmit and return the signals.

On the other end of the shaft is the handle to control the steering of the catheter along with a reusable system cable that connects the handle to the system with monitors.

Which Parts of the EP Catheter are Made by PCA-HPMS?

In addition to the customization that makes PCA-HPMS stand out from competitors, we also manufacture components to support the performance and reliability of EP Catheter.

There are two main elements to an EP Catheter—the catheter itself, and the system. PCA-HPMS makes parts for both.

Catheter

  • We provide the cables to transmit the signals to and from the electrodes, transducers or other sensors. We can customize the cable design to meet the customers’ electrical and mechanical requirements. Our offerings include fine coaxial cables up to 50 AWG, twisted pair cables up to 52 AWG, and composite cables.
  • We provide fine pitch termination technology needed to terminate the fine gauge wires to FPCs or PCBs.

System

  • We manufacture reusable cable assemblies. These cables are sterilized and reused multiple times so assembly cables need to be reliable and resistant to autoclave sterilization and chemicals.
  • Our copper alloy has high tensile strength and high conductivity, providing reliability between the catheter and the system.
  • We offer our non-sticky silicone SilMED® sheath. Silicone is resistant to chemicals and autoclave sterilization and unlike conventional silicone, SilMED has a smooth surface and remains smooth even after 10,000 wipes with disinfectant.
