PCA-HPMS Components Vital for Life Saving Ultrasound Devices

Whether it’s monitoring your baby’s development during pregnancy, capturing imaging for a heart condition, or examining anything from a cyst to a thyroid issue or infection, ultrasound is an essential and life-saving medical procedure.

Proterial Cable America’s High Performance Medical Solutions (PCA-HPMS) manufactures components for ultrasound machines, and we could not be prouder to provide crucial elements to such an important piece of medical equipment.

What Parts Does PCA-HPMS Make for Ultrasound Machines?

PCA-HPMS develops and manufactures a variety of components for use in ultrasound equipment. Our products help ensure the medical diagnostics performed with the equipment are reliable and consistent.

Our components are involved from core technology all the way to final assembly.

  • High-Performance Alloys: PCA-HPMS develops and manufactures alloys with high strength and limited loss of conductivity (measured to copper) that are essential for miniaturizing the multi-conductor cables needed for next generation 4D ultrasound systems.
  • Coaxial Cables: During an ultrasound procedure, it is critical to have a reliable signal to create a clear image. Coaxial cables made by PCA-HPMS feature excellent capacitance control, with low-capacitance designs achieved through a precision extrusion process
  • Multi-Coaxial, Multi-Conductor Cable: Ultrasound probes require miniaturized wires and up to 256 coaxes for the most high-resolution image possible.
  • Assemblies: Low-Level Assembly (LLA), which does not have filtering circuitry, and High-Level Assembly (HLA), which includes filtering circuitry and enclosures.

How Does an Ultrasound Machine Work?

When describing how an ultrasound machine works, it is helpful to compare it to a bat’s use of echolocation, but in a more compact and precise way.

To start, a patient has a probe placed on their body. The ultrasound machine generates electricity, which is then applied to an array of piezoelectric elements. This causes each element in the array to vibrate and emit high-frequency sound waves into the body. These sound waves bounce off various tissues and return to the piezo elements, where the machine collects the returning echoes.

The array allows for capturing detailed information from different angles, enhancing the accuracy of the data. Once the information is gathered, the machine processes it to produce an image on the screen that both the doctor and patient can see. This entire process happens instantly, providing valuable insights quickly and efficiently.

What PCA-HPMS Components Do for the Ultrasound

In addition to the array, the cables and assembly are the most critical components of an ultrasound machine.

The LLA and HLA assemblies offered by PCA-HPMS provide the power to the probe and transmit signals from each piezo element. The energy is transmitted via as many as 256 separate coaxial cables. Braided tubing is used during the process to maintain the durability of these cables for long-term repeated use. The signals are then converted into images displayed on the system via micro-coaxial cables.

Together these PCA-HPMS components play an enormously important role in the ultrasound machine’s ability to provide accurate and important information to doctors and patients.

In addition, PCA-HPMS offers PFAS-free options, which means ultrasound systems that include PCA-HPMS components are not only lifesaving, but environmentally responsible as well.

Why Ultrasounds are Important

While many people associate ultrasound machines with pregnancy to provide parents with the first glimpses of their baby, the technology is used for a wide variety of medical procedures and is extremely important and easy to perform.

  • Versatility: Ultrasounds can be used to check fetal development throughout pregnancy and can also examine internal organs and guide surgical procedures.
  • Instantaneous: For diagnoses, obtaining answers quickly is crucial, and ultrasound delivers immediate feedback.
