Proterial Cable America (PCA) is always looking for ways to innovate and stay at the forefront of the wire and cable industry, and digital electricity is the latest example of that policy.
A Fault Managed Power System (FMPS) is a remarkable new option for stadiums or other large venues putting on large-scale events. The company VoltServer trademarked the name “Digital Electricity” for their FMPS.
A FMPS runs a significant amount of power (450 volts) across small cables and because of the way an FMPS works, the safety infrastructure of traditional power cables is unnecessary.
Power is transmitted through a “pulse current” wave form which means high amounts of power can be send over long distances. They are faster and cheaper to install than traditional alternatives.
A live wire is a scary reality, especially when you are talking about a powerful connection at a stadium. But that fear is alleviated because an important aspect of a FMPS that can prevent catastrophe!
While large amounts of power are sent to the receiver, a FMPS also sends a digital check signal that the receiver monitors. If anything unusual occurs, the power instantly shuts down. This means the system is turned off before a fire can start or a person is shocked.
UL ratings are the standard for safety throughout the industry. If a company wants to make components for a FMPS, they must first earn UL Class 4 approval. PCA has received the distinction, which is the first step necessary to properly interconnect all FMPS equipment.
Class 4 cables can be used just for power or serve hybrid purposes also carrying communication cables. An example would be a Fiber Optic Cable which can carry data coming from whatever it is simultaneously powering.
PCA has Class 4 UL approval for 2 twisted pairs, 4 twisted pairs, and 8 twisted pairs of 16 AWG. PCA’s approval permits shielding such Aluminum/Polyester with a drain wire or a braid shield which furthers the opportunities for PCA customers.
Optional markings also available include 90C, Outdoor Rated/Wet Locations Approved, Direct Burial Suitable, Sunlight Resistant, and FT4 Flame Rating.
