High Pressure Braided Medical Tubing

Braided Tubing for Medical Applications

Braid reinforced tubing is an extrusion which fully encompasses a metal or fiber braided profile between two layers of polymer. The addition of braided fortification to plastic tubing can drastically expand burst pressure resistance, column strength, and torque transmission.

Medical Applications for High Pressure Braided Tubing

Braided TubingHPMS wire and filament braided tube products and braid reinforced tubing are ideal for catheter shafts and other medical applications that require certain beneficial features, some of these include:

  • Flexibility
  • Torque response
  • Pushability
  • Axial stiffness
  • Kink resistance
  • Crush resistance
  • Resistance to ovalization
  • Electrical shielding
  • Higher burst pressure resistance

Braided Reinforced Tube Options

With our in-house braided tube capabilities, we can provide competitive lead times for our custom braided tubing extrusions. We have numerous options available for our braided catheter tubing, including:

  • Multiple ends
  • Variable braid angles
  • Dense pics per inch
  • Woven braided transaxial elements
  • Flat and round wire ends as small as 0.0005″
  • Diameters as small as .08″, and as large as .6″

Additionally, we can also braid single lumens, multi-lumens, eccentric lumens, single- and multi-lumen tapered tubing tapered tubing—we can even add wire braiding to a single lumen within a multi-lumen configuration. Questions about our braided tubing options? Call us today!

Custom Configurations

Using state-of-the-art computer-controlled equipment, HPMS can control and customize the braid configuration of our wire braiding for optimum effectiveness regarding your medical application. Our advanced, proprietary braiding techniques allow compression loads to be increased, which helps our braided tube avoid buckling during excessive compression loading of retrievable, implantable medical devices such as catheters, stent grafts, and heart valves.

 Braided Tube Patterns

Braid patterns are created by controlling the pitch of the filament, the filament gauge size, and filament shape (round, flat, etc.). Examples of patterns for braided tubes include “standard” 1 over 2 under 2, diamond patterns, and 1 over 1 under. Changing the pitch within the length of a single shaft can increase or decrease the flexibility and stiffness of the braided tubing.

Material Options for Braided Catheter Tubing

There are many unique types of material that can be used to manufacture braid reinforced tubing, some of the more common filaments used include:

  • Flat or round metal wire (including stainless steel, nitinol, and others)
  • PEN
  • PET

Here at HPMS we are experts at selecting the right braiding material and pattern for customers’ needs, and we will work with you to create the ideal solution for your application needs.
