PRODUCT FOCUS: External Ventricular Drain (EVD)
Catheter Main Extrusion

Proterial Cable America High Performance Medical Solutions (PCA-HPMS) manufactures components used in lifesaving devices including the main extrusion used in External Ventricular Drain (EVD) catheters.

EVD catheters are essential medical equipment, and HPMS values our part in putting important equipment like the EVD catheter in the hands of the professionals who will use it to save lives. Our extrusions meet the highest standards and when you work with us you know the product will be high performance and high quality.

What is an EVD Catheter?

An EVD catheter is a medical device temporarily inserted into the ventricular cavity of a patient’s brain in order to drain cerebrospinal fluid externally. The EVD catheter is used because drainage can alleviate intracranial pressure and is necessary in the event of intraventricular hemorrhage or hydrocephalic shunt infections.

The catheter uses gravity to drain fluid, which helps protect the brain from swelling or pressure.

Parts of the EVD Catheter

Several components work together to allow the EVD catheter to drain fluid as intended. The key elements of the catheter include:

  • Catheter Body: A flexible tube placed inside the brain’s ventricles to drain fluid.
  • Insertion Tip: The end of the device which allows smooth and safe entry into the brain’s ventricular space.
  • Graduated Depth Markings: Markings are used to ensure proper placement and monitoring of the catheter’s insertion depth.
  • Ventricular Chamber: Provides a controlled area for fluid collection.
  • Tubing System: A series of tubes connecting the catheter to the drainage bag or monitoring equipment.

Where PCA-HPMS Comes In

The primary component of the EVD Catheter is the main extrusion. This part, manufactured by PCA-HPMS forms the catheter body.

This central tube is crucial to the entire medical device’s function as it acts as the main channel through which cerebrospinal fluid flows during drainage.

Why the Main Extrusion is Essential

The extrusion PCA-HPMS produces isn’t just any component—it is a fundamental reason for the EVD Catheter’s effectiveness and reliability. This tubing needs to be:

  • Durable. The catheter can be implanted for days or weeks and needs to maintain effectiveness.
  • Flexible. While implanted, the EVD catheter needs to be just as effective when the patient moves.
  • Precise. The main reason for the device is to drain fluid, which means the main extrusion needs to ensure drainage is smooth and consistent.

Our extrusion is a vital part of our customers’ catheters, and with our component included in their design, our customers can know that patients have the best chance of recovery during treatment.
