What is a MPTL?

MPTL stands for Modular Plug Terminated Link. It’s used to describe a cabling situation in which one end of the permanent link (jack-cable-jack) is terminated in a plug versus a jack (also sometimes called a socket). The other end typically terminates in a patch panel in the data room.

This cabling method could apply to Category 5e, 6, 6A, 7, 7A links. This configuration is growing in popularity due to the number of networked devices being added to the network that can directly receive a plug. These devices primarily include cameras and wireless access points. Using the MPTL method eliminates the need for a jack/workbox and patch cord at the device end.

However, testing of this configuration requires special test equipment which is now coming onto the market.
