Proterial / Cable Solutions / Category 5e OSP
Proterial Cable America’s robust category 5e outdoor cables are designed to offer reliable functionality regardless of installation conditions. These Cat5e outdoor cables have tough polyethylene outer jackets with carbon black to protect the cable core from water and the harsh sun. A gel-filled inner core prevents the migration of any water that may have breached the outer layers of protection.
Whether used in lashed aerials, ducts, or underground conduits, these data cables meet high technical performance reliability standards. They are designed to deliver gigabit speeds and power to outdoor Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices.

Cat5e is a great cable choice when you need a dependable, powered Ethernet link to outdoor devices or between buildings with a straightforward plan. It delivers power and data on a single line, features a UV-resistant jacket and a gel core for weather protection in buried or ducted paths, and offers solid Gigabit performance with easy installation and maintenance. If your route is very long or you expect much higher future bandwidth, fiber is a good alternative to consider.
Yes. This cable supports the full range of IEEE PoE standards from 15W (802.3af) to 100W PoE++ (802.3bt Type 4), covering virtually any outdoor-powered endpoint, such as IP cameras, wireless access points, intercoms, and environmental sensors. To ensure reliable PoE performance, stay within the 100-meter TIA-568 channel limit (voltage drop increases with distance), avoid over-bending or excessive pull tension during installation, and use IP-rated (IP67/IP68) weatherproof RJ45 enclosures at termination points. The cable handles the run; the connector end needs its own weatherproofing.
This cable is UTP. There is no shield to bond or ground, which makes routing and termination straightforward and eliminates any risk of ground loops. The trade-off is moderate susceptibility to EMI, so maintain separation from power lines, motors, and other noise sources along the cable route. For most commercial, campus, and residential outdoor runs, UTP performs reliably. If your route passes near heavy industrial equipment or high-voltage infrastructure that can’t be avoided, a shielded outdoor cable with a proper grounding plan is worth considering instead.
Protection works on two levels. Internally, a non-conductive water-blocking gel surrounds the twisted pairs, preventing moisture from wicking along the cable length, even if the outer jacket is nicked. This is particularly important in buried and conduit runs where standing water is common. Externally, the black polyolefin jacket contains carbon black, which absorbs UV radiation and prevents the jacket from cracking or becoming brittle over years of sun exposure. One practical note: when terminating, the gel must be cleaned from conductors with isopropyl alcohol before connecting to jacks or patch panels. At any point where the jacket is cut, use IP67/IP68 weatherproof enclosures to maintain protection end-to-end.
Yes. This cable is rated for direct burial installations. Its gel-filled core and rugged polyolefin jacket provide sufficient protection against soil moisture and ground pressure without requiring conduit. That said, conduit is still recommended in areas prone to rodent activity, in areas with heavy vehicle traffic above the cable path, or for future excavation work, as it makes cable replacement significantly easier.
To avoid degrading the cable’s electrical performance, do not exceed the minimum bend radius — typically 4× the cable diameter, which is approximately 0.92″ (23mm) for this cable. For pull tension, follow TIA-568 guidelines and do not exceed 25 lbs (110 N) of pulling force during installation. Over-bending or excessive tension can distort the twisted pairs inside and cause permanent performance loss.
No. This cable is designed for lashed aerial installations, meaning it needs to be lashed to a separate steel messenger wire for overhead runs. It is not a self-supporting aerial cable. For self-supporting aerial installations, a figure-8 style cable with an integrated messenger wire is the appropriate choice.
Yes. The gel will be present when you strip the jacket, and it must be cleaned from the conductors before terminating. Isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth is the standard method. This is a normal step in outdoor cable termination. Pre-made outdoor-rated patch panels and keystone jacks designed for gel-filled cables are recommended to ensure a clean, reliable connection.
