Category 5e Power+™ Cables
Power over Ethernet (PoE) has established itself as the best method for powering a wide range of remotely located networked devices. From cameras, to wireless access points (WAPs), to LED lighting systems, PoE offers cost savings by eliminating the need for traditional electrical wiring while providing greater control functionality over a common network. PoE employs 4-pair copper ethernet cables for accommodating both power and signal. Category cables, such as Category 5e, have been used for PoE since they are readily available on the market, carry low voltage DC current and are easily installed. PoE permits users to place power supplies where they are most desirable, such as rack mounted in a data room. Local power to the device is not needed. Hitachi's Category 5e Power+™ will support the latest IEEE PoE applications, including 802.3af (Type 1), 802.3at (Type 2) and 802.3bt (Type 3 and Type 4). In addition to powering devices, Category 5e Power+ is UL verified to the Category 5e standard, ANSI/TIA 568-2.D, and can support Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T, 802.3ab) to 100 meters. For PoE applications, Category 5e Power+™ cable offers significant power support by utilizing 22-gauge conductors. With a UL tested ampacity of .7 amps/conductor, Power+ cables can safely support 140 watts of power even in large bundles of up to 192 cables. When the bundles are smaller, power support increases. As in individual cable, Power+ can support up to 3.0 amps/conductor. The large gauge size of Power+ conductors also permits it to carry power farther than smaller gauge conductors.
