Hitachi Cable America Inc., Installs New Stretch-Wrappers
Manchester, New Hampshire, USA, December 1, 2014
At Hitachi Cable in Manchester, NH, we realize that sometimes you have to invest in order to save money in the long run. When the investment also results in a positive impact on the environment, the decision to move forward is a much easier one to make. Such was the case with the purchase of two new stretch-wrappers for our shipping department. The stretch-wrappers, as the name implies, are used to wrap our pallets of product before they are shipped to the customer. Stretch-wrapping keeps the product secure and prohibits the contents of the pallet from shifting during transport. It is the universally accepted method for securing items on a pallet.
So, what makes the purchase of these stretch-wrappers noteworthy? These new wrappers, manufactured by Wulftec, are actually advanced wrappers that pre-stretch the wrap before applying it. This is significant because the new wrappers use 1/3 the amount of stretch-wrap as the older equipment. The older wrappers merely dispensed the wrap as the spinning pallet pulled it out. The material was stretched slightly and this stretching combined with the static cling properties associated with plastic wrap (think Saran Wrap) helped lock the pallet contents together. The new wrappers stretch the wrap material 200% prior to the wrap being applied, basically turning one foot of wrap into three. The stretch wrap is designed to accommodate this level of stretching.
Although the wrappers were a substantial investment, they will pay for themselves rather quickly by using less stretch-wrap. The positive environmental impact is the fact that 1/3 the amount of wrap will be used versus the older equipment. That significantly reduces the amount of shrink wrap that we use and, accordingly, reduce the amount of wrap that will have to be recycled, or worse, end up in a land fill. Standard stretch wrap film is a petroleum based product and any reduction in its use is in the best interest of the environment and, therefore, Hitachi Cable America.
